περὶ δὲ τοῦ πατρὸς οὐδὲν ἦν πυθέσθαι μέτριον, οἱ μὲν γὰρ ἐν κναφείῳ τινὶ καὶ γενέσθαι καὶ τραφῆναι τόν ἄνδρα λέγουσιν, οἱ δʼ εἰς Τύλλον Ἄττιον ἀνάγουσι τὴν ἀρχὴν τοῦ γένους, βασιλεύσαντα λαμπρῶς ἐν Οὐολούσκοις καὶ πολεμήσαντα Ῥωμαίοις οὐκ ἀδυνάτως. ὁ μέντοι πρῶτος ἐκ τοῦ γένους Κικέρων ἐπονομασθεὶς ἄξιος λόγου δοκεῖ γενέσθαι, διὸ τὴν ἐπίκλησιν οὐκ ἀπέρριψαν οἱ μετʼ αὐτόν, ἀλλʼ ἠσπάσαντο, καίπερ ὑπὸ πολλῶν χλευαζομένην. κίκερα γὰρ οἱ Λατῖνοι τόν ἐρέβινθον καλοῦσι, κἀκεῖνος ἐν τῷ πέρατι τῆς ῥινὸς διαστολὴν, ὡς ἔοικεν, ἀμβλεῖαν εἶχεν ὥσπερ ἐρεβίνθου διαφυήν, ἀφʼ ἧς ἐκτήσατο τὴν ἐπωνυμίαν. αὐτός
