ἴδιον, ἀλλὰ γὰρ καὶ κοινὸν τῶν οἰκείων πάντων ἡγοῦμαι τὴν τοῦ ἐμοῦ διδασκάλου περὶ λόγους σπουδήν. τῶν μὲν γὰρ στρατηγῶν τὰ ἐπιφανέστατα κατορθώματα σωτηρίας μόνον οἴδαμεν τῆς ἐκ τῶν παραχρῆμα κινδύνων αἴτια γιγνόμενα στρατιώταις ὀλίγοις ἢ πόλει μιᾷ ἢ κἂν ἑνί τινι ἔθνει, βελτίους δʼ οὐδαμῶς ποιοῦντα οὔτε τοὺς στρατιώτας οὔτε τοὺς πολίτας, ἀλλʼ οὐδὲ τοὺς ὁμοεθνεῖς· τὴν δὲ παιδείαν, οὐσίαν εὐδαιμονίας οὖσαν αἰτίαν τʼ εὐβουλίας, οὐ μόνον ἔστιν εὑρεῖν ἢ οἴκῳ ἢ πόλει ἢ ἔθνει χρησίμην, ἀλλὰ παντὶ τῷ τῶν ἀνθρώπων γένει. ὅσῳ οὖν ἡ ἐκ παιδείας ὠφέλεια μείζων πάντων στρατηγημάτων, τοσούτῳ καὶ ἡ
