γένοιτο. φιλοσοφία ἐστὶν ὄρεξις σοφίας, ἢ λύσις καὶ περιαγωγὴ ψυχῆς ἀπὸ σώματος, ἐπὶ τὰ νοητὰ ημῶντρπομένων καὶ τὰ κατ᾽ ἀλήθειαν ὄντα· σοφία δέ ἐστιν ἐπιστήμη θείων καὶ ἀνθρωπίνων πραγμάτων. φιλόσοφος δέ ἐστιν ὁ παρωνύμως ὠνομασμένος ἀπὸ τῆς φιλοσοφίας, ὡς ὁ μουσικὸς ἀπὸ τῆς μουσικῆς· πεφυκέναι δὲ τοῦτον χρὴ πρῶτον μὲν πρὸς τὰ μαθήματα, ὅσα δύναται προσοικειοῦν καὶ προσάγειν αὐτὸν τῇ γνώσει τῆς νοητῆς οὐσίας καὶ μὴ πλανωμένης τε καὶ ῥευστῆς, ἔπειτα δὲ πρὸς τὴν ἀλήθειαν ἔχειν ἐρωτικῶς καὶ μηδαμῆ πρςδέχεσθαι τὸ ψεῦδος, ἐπὶ τούτοις δὲ καὶ φύσει πως σώφρονα εἰναι καὶ κατὰ τὸ παθητικὸν τῆς ψυχῆς φυσικῶς κατεσταλμένον. ὁ γὰρ ἐφιέμενος μαθημάτων περὶ τὰ ὄντα καὶ ἐπὶ ταῦτα τρέπων ἑαυτοῦ τὴν ὄρεξιν οὐ θαυμάζοι ἂν τὰς ἡδονάς. δεῖ δὲ καὶ ἐλευθέριον εἶναι τῇ γνώμῃ τὸν μέλλοντα φιλοσοφεῖν·
