Πλατωνικὸς ὢν ὁ πατὴρ τοῦ βιβλίου κατὰ τὸν Πλατωνικὸν σκοπὸν ζητεῖ τὸ τέλος τῆς ὄντως φιλοσοφίας καὶ τὴν ὁδὸν τὴν ἄγουσαν ἐπὶ ταύτην· ὅτι μὲν οὖν, ὡς καὶ Νικόμαχος [Arithm. Isag. I 1, Hoche] ὁρίζεται, φιλοσοφία ἐστὶ φιλία σοφίας, παντὶ προῦπτον· ζητητέον δὲ, τί ἐστι σοφία καὶ πόθεν ἔσχε τὸ ὄνομα; Σοφία μὲν οὖν ἐκλήθη οἱονεὶ σάφειά τις οὖσα, ὡς σαφηνίζουσα πάντα· τοῦτο δὲ τὸ σαφὲς εἴρηται οἱονεὶ φαές τι ὄν, παρὰ τὸ φάος καὶ φῶς, διὰ τὸ εἰς φῶς ἄγειν τὰ κεκρυμμένα. Ἐπεὶ τοίνυν τὰ νοητὰ καὶ θεῖα, ὡς Ἀριστοτέλης φησίν (Eth. Nic. X c 7, 1177 a 15, b 30; De an. I c 4, 408 b 29; Gen. an.
