Ἄρχεται ἀπὸ τῆς βασιλείας Νί- νου καὶ Σεμιράμεως, καὶ κάτεισι μέχρι τῶν τοῦ βασι- λέως Ἀλεξάνδρου χρόνων. Συμπεραίνεται δὲ αὐτοῦ ἡ ἱστορία ἐν λόγοις θʹ κατ' ἐπωνυμίαν τῶν θʹ Μουσῶν, Κλειοῦς, Θαλείας, Πολυμνίας, Μελπομένης, Τερψιχό- ρης, Εὐτέρπης, Καλλιόπης, Ἐρατοῦς, Οὐρανίης· ἐν ᾗ καὶ τὰ κατὰ Ἀλέξανδρον τὸν Μακεδόνα διέξεισιν. Ἔστι δὲ τὴν φράσιν ἰωνίζων, καὶ τοῦ προσήκοντος πλέον τῇ συντομίᾳ ἀποχρώμενος, οὐδ' ἄλλο οὐδὲν ἄξιον θαυμάσαι καὶ ζηλῶσαι ἐνδεικνύμενος πλὴν τῆς κατὰ τὴν ἱστορίαν μαθήσεως. Οὗτος τὸ μὲν γένος αὑτοῦ καὶ πατρίδα, ὡς αὐτὸς ἐκεῖνός φησιν, ὥσπερ Ὅμηρος ἀποσιωπᾷ, ὅτι δὲ διατρίβων ἐν Σικελίᾳ φυγῆς ἕνεκα τὴν ἱστορίαν συνέτα- ξεν, ἀποφαίνεται, τὸ μὲν ἀναγκαῖον, πατρίδα εἰπεῖν καὶ γένος, παρεὶς, τὸ δὲ καὶ μικροψυχίαν ἐμφαῖνον ἐν μνήμῃ πεποιηκώς.
