Υἱῷ καὶ θυγατρὶ μὴ προσμειδιάσεις, ἵνα μὴ ὕστε- ρον δακρύσῃς. Σπάνιον εἴσαγε τὸν πόδα πρὸς τὸν φίλον, ἵνα μὴ σοῦ πλησθεὶς μισήσῃ σε. Μηδέποτε ὀρεχθῇς κτήσασθαι φίλον τὸν μήτε ψυ- χὴν μήτε σῶμα εὖ ποιῆσαι δυνάμενον. Ἐρωτηθεὶς ὑπὸ τοῦ Κροίσου, τίς σοι δοκεῖ εὐδαί- μων; Τέλλος, ἔφη, Ἀθηναῖος καὶ Κλέοβις καὶ Βί- των, καὶ τὰ θρυλλούμενα. Φασὶ δέ τινες, ὅτι κοσμήσας ἑαυτὸν ὁ Κροῖσος παντοδαπῶς καὶ καθίσας εἰς τὸν θρόνον ἤρετο αὐ- τόν, εἴ τι θέαμα κάλλιον τεθέαται· ὁ δέ, ἀλε- κτρυόνας, εἶπε, φασιανοὺς καὶ ταώς· φυσικῷ γὰρ ἄνθει κεκόσμηνται καὶ μυρίῳ καλλίονι.
