ἐπιτειχισθέντων ὀργάνων τῇ πόλει, ὥστε διὰ πλῆθος βελῶν ἐνδοῦναι καὶ ὑποχωρῆσαι τοὺς ἐπὶ τῶν ἐπάλξεων, προσ- ήγοντο καὶ οἱ καλούμενοι κριοί. μεγίστη δὲ ἄρα καὶ ἥδε ἡ μηχανή· δοκὸς ἐκ ξύλων πρὸς ἄλληλα νευόντων χαλαραῖς ἀπῃωρημένη ἁλύσεσιν, ἐπιδορατίδα καὶ προκαλύμματα ὃν εἴρηται τρόπον ἔχουσα, ἀσφαλείας ἕνεκα τῶν ἐργαζο- μένων. καλῳδίοις γὰρ ἐκ τῆς ὄπισθεν κεραίας εἷλκον βιαίως ἄνδρες αὐτὴν ἐς τὸ ἐναντίον τοῦ δεξομένου τὴν πληγήν, καὶ μετὰ ταῦτα ἠφίεσαν, ὥστε τῇ ῥύμῃ πᾶν τὸ ἐμπῖπτον τοῦ τείχους ἀφανίζεσθαι μέρος. οἱ δὲ ἀπὸ τῶν τειχῶν ἀμυνόμενοι ἁμαξιαίους λίθους πρὸς τοῦτο ἤδη παρεσκευασ-
