Heylbut, op. cit., 407–460.. urn:cts:greekLit:tlg4033.tlg002.local001","excerpt":"δὲ ἀκόλαστος ἔχων τὴν ἐπιθυμίαν ῥέπουσαν πρὸς τὰς φαύλας ἡδονὰς εὐ- θὺς ἔχει καὶ τὸν λόγον ἐπακολουθοῦντα καὶ μὴ ἀντιτείνοντα. ὁμοίως δὲ καὶ ὁ θρασὺς ἔχει τὸν θυμὸν ἀτάκτως ὁρμῶν οἷς οὐ δεῖ καὶ ὅτε οὐ δεῖ, καὶ εὐθὺς ἔχει καὶ τὸν λόγον ἐπακολουθοῦντα. ὥστε καὶ ἐπὶ τῶν κακιῶν τῶν ἀντικειμένων ταῖς ἠθικαῖς ἀρεταῖς ἰσονομία τίς ἐστι τῶν μερῶν τῆς ψυχῆς καὶ οὐ μάχη. ἐπὶ δὲ τῆς ἀκρασίας οὐκ ἔστιν ἰσονομία τῶν μερῶν τῆς ψυχῆς. ἡ δὲ ἡρωϊκὴ καὶ θεία ἐπεί ἐστιν ὑπὲρ πᾶσαν ἀρετήν, τού- του χάριν ἐδέησεν αὐτῷ ἰδίᾳ καὶ περὶ αὐτῆς διαλαβεῖν. ἐπεὶ δὲ αἱ κα- κίαι, οἷον ἡ ἀκρασία καὶ ἡ θηριώδης, γνωριμώτεραί εἰσι τῶν ἀρετῶν, τῆς τε ἐγκρατείας καὶ τῆς ἡρωϊκῆς καὶ θείας ἀρετῆς, τούτου χάριν ἀπὸ τῶν γνωριμωτέρων ἤρξατο, ἵνα δι' αὐτῶν καὶ τὰς ἀρετὰς πιστώσηται.
