Οἶδα συνθεῖναι λόγους οὐ ψευδομένους, τρόπους δὲ ποικί- λης ἀρετῆς δεῖξαί μοι οὐ πάρεστι. Τὸ ἔργον εἰκὼν ἀρετῆς γίνεται, ὁ δὲ λό- γος σκιὰ τῆς εἰκόνος ἐστίν. Ἐν τῇ σκιᾷ οὐδεὶς χαρακτήρ, μόνη δὲ φαντασία χαρακτῆρος ἐστί. Τί οὖν; Αἰτηθέντες παραιτησόμεθα; Ἢ μὴ παράσχωμεν παρακληθέν- τες; Καὶ τίς ἡμῖν καρπὸς ὑπάρξειεν; Πολλοὶ καὶ τὴν ὑπακοὴν εἰς ἀρετῆς ποίησιν παρειλήφασιν· εἰ δὲ καὶ εἰς τὰ πράγματα ἀπίδωμεν, εὑρήσομεν δού- λους δεσπόταις ἰδίοις δανείζοντας καὶ νέους πρεσβύταις συμβουλεύοντας καὶ ἀναξίους μεγίστοις ἀνδράσι συνεργοῦντας εἴς τινα.
