Καὶ δῆλόν ἐστι πάντοθεν, ὡς περιττὴ καὶ οὐ κατὰ φύ- σιν ἡ τῶν χρημάτων ἐπιθυμία, ἅτε μὴ ἐκ φύσεως τὴν βίαν ἔχουσα, ἀλλ' ἐκ μο- χθηρᾶς προαιρέσεως· διὸ καὶ ἀσύγγνωστα ἁμαρτάνει ὁ ταύτῃ ἑκὼν ἡττώμενος. Ὥστε χρὴ σαφῶς ἐπιγινώσκειν ἡμᾶς, ὡς οὐκ εἰς τρυφὴν μόνην καὶ τὴν τῶν σωμάτων ἀπόλαυσιν ἡ φιληδονία ὁρίζεται, ἀλλ' ἐν παντὶ τρόπῳ καὶ πράγματι προαιρέσει ψυχῆς ἀγαπωμένῳ καὶ προσπαθείᾳ. Ἵνα δὲ σαφέστερον ἔτι τὰ πάθη καὶ τὸ τῆς ψυχῆς τριμερὲς διαγινώσκηται, καὶ τάδε, ὡς ἐνόν, ἐν ἐπιτόμῳ προσθεῖναι δεῖν ἐκρίναμεν. Ἡ ψυχὴ διαιρεῖται εἰς τρία, λογιστικόν, θυμικὸν καὶ ἐπιθυμητικόν.
