Τὸ περὶ πᾶν εἶδος ἀρετῆς σπουδαῖον τῆς σῆς τιμιότητος, ὦ ἱερὲ πάτερ Ἰωάννη, τοῦ λόγου καὶ ἀμελεῖν οὐκ ἀνέχεται, κἂν τοῖς τῆς προ- εδρίας ἀγῶσιν ἐνησχόληται. Οἶδας γὰρ ὡς λόγος ἐστὶ τὸ διδασκαλίας ὄργανον, ὅπερ ἀρετῇ συνεζευγμένον ἄρτιον τοῦ θεοῦ ἀποδείκνυσιν ἄνθρωπον ὡς φωστῆρα ἐν κόσμῳ λάμποντα, οἷος αὐτὸς σχηματίζεις, παμμακάριστε. Τοίνυν, καθὼς ἐκέλευσας, τὴν τῶν σχολίων βίβλον τοῦ πανσόφου <Ἰωάννου Χάρακος> ἐπελεύσομαι καὶ σύντομον ἐξ αὐτῆς ὠφέλειαν καρπώσασθαι πειράσομαι, τὸ πλάτος δὲ τοῦ λόγου παραιτή- σομαι, ὅπερ αὐτός, οὐχ ὡς ῥητορείας ἄπειρος, εἰς τοὺς εἰσαγομένους δὲ μᾶλλον φιλανθρωπευσάμενος, ἐπενόησας.
